DWP Reports Decline in Pension Credit Applications, Leaving Many Pensioners Without Support
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has reported a significant decline in Pension Credit applications over the past year, with figures showing a 34% drop from 321,035 applications in 2024/25 to 211,125 in 2025/26. Despite this decrease, it is estimated that up to 910,000 eligible pensioner households in the UK are not claiming the benefit. Pension Credit is designed to supplement the income of older individuals on lower incomes, potentially providing an annual boost of around £4,300. The benefit also serves as a gateway to additional financial support, such as help with housing or heating costs, Council Tax reductions, and free TV licenses for those over 75. The decline in applications follows a previous surge linked to changes in Winter Fuel Payment eligibility, which had temporarily increased awareness of Pension Credit.
