Alvah Dunning: The Last Survivor of the Adirondacks' Untamed Era
In March 1902, Alvah Dunning, an 85-year-old woodsman from the Adirondacks, traveled to New York City for a sportsmen’s exhibition. Known as 'Uncle Alvah,' Dunning was celebrated as one of the last survivors of the Adirondacks before the region was transformed by railroads, hotels, and private preserves. His familiar white beard and weathered face had become iconic through photographs and newspaper profiles, making him a symbol of a bygone era.
