Federal Government Awards $150 Million Contract to Texas Law Firm for Migrant Child Representation
The federal government is set to award a $150 million contract to the Houston-based Burke Law Group to represent unaccompanied immigrant children in U.S. government custody during immigration proceedings. This decision, which will be officially announced in the Federal Register, has sparked controversy due to the firm's limited experience in immigration and asylum law. The Burke Law Group, known for its work in environmental and regulatory matters, has only two attorneys specializing in immigration cases. The contract follows the expiration of a previous agreement with a consortium of nearly 100 legal nonprofits, which had been providing similar services. The Trump administration had previously halted payments to these nonprofits over a dispute regarding the confidentiality of information about the children.
