mRNA Vaccines Show Promise in Cancer Treatment Amidst Infrastructure Challenges
mRNA vaccines are being explored as a promising treatment for cancer, particularly in pancreatic cancer, where they are combined with neoadjuvant chemotherapy to target remaining cancer cells. Early-phase clinical trials have shown that personalized mRNA cancer vaccines can generate durable immune responses and antitumor activity. However, the implementation of these vaccines faces significant infrastructure challenges, including high production costs and complex logistics. Personalized vaccines can cost over $100,000 per patient to produce, requiring specialized manufacturing facilities and a sophisticated logistics network. Despite these challenges, mRNA vaccines have been well tolerated in trials, with manageable toxicities and no evidence of insertional mutagenesis.
