FDA Approves First mRNA-Based Flu Vaccine for Older Adults Amidst Controversy
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Moderna's mRNA-based flu vaccine, mFlusiva, for individuals aged 50 and older. This marks the first flu vaccine using mRNA technology, similar to that used in COVID-19 vaccines. Moderna announced that the vaccine will be available in a few weeks, aligning with the 2026-2027 flu season. The approval follows a contentious period where the FDA initially refused to review the vaccine due to political and public health controversies surrounding mRNA technology. However, after industry and expert backlash, the FDA convened a panel of independent advisers who unanimously recommended the vaccine's approval. The vaccine is expected to offer stronger protection than traditional flu vaccines and can be updated more rapidly in response to new flu strains.
