USCIS Updates Naturalization Civics Test Requirements for Future Applicants
The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has updated its naturalization civics test, a change that will affect all applicants submitting Form N-400 on or after October 20, 2025. This revision aligns with Executive Order 14161. The naturalization process, which involves an interview, an English test, and a civics test, remains fundamentally the same. However, the civics test component will now require applicants to answer 12 out of 20 questions correctly, a significant increase from the previous requirement of 6 correct answers out of 10 questions. The English test, which assesses speaking, reading, and writing skills, will continue as before. Applicants who filed their Form N-400 before October 20, 2025, will take the older version of the civics test. USCIS provides free study materials to help applicants prepare for both the English and civics tests, and exemptions or accommodations are available for qualifying individuals based on age, disability, or other factors.
