Indian Student's OPT Revocation Highlights Risks of Fraudulent Employers in the U.S.
An Indian student in the U.S. has shared a cautionary tale about the revocation of their Optional Practical Training (OPT) status due to association with a fraudulent employer. The student, who remained anonymous, revealed that their STEM OPT was revoked after U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) audited the company they were associated with and found it lacked a physical presence in the U.S. The company, based in India, only maintained a mailing address in the U.S., leading to the student's Employment Authorization Document (EAD) being revoked and a 30-day notice to leave the country. This incident is part of a broader issue, as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) identified over 10,000 cases of OPT fraud in May. The student urged others to ensure their employers have a legitimate U.S. presence to avoid similar situations.
