Agricultural Waste Transformed into Prebiotic Ingredients for Gut Health
Researchers are increasingly converting agricultural residues, traditionally considered waste, into valuable prebiotic ingredients. These residues, such as sugarcane bagasse, wheat straw, and rice straw, are rich in lignocellulosic biomass. Through bioprocessing technologies, specifically controlled extraction and enzymatic hydrolysis, a component called xylan from hemicellulose can be transformed into xylooligosaccharides (XOS). XOS are emerging prebiotics known for their ability to selectively stimulate beneficial gut bacteria. This process not only addresses food innovation but also contributes to waste reduction. Prebiotics are non-digestible food components that, when fermented by gut microbes, produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) like acetate, propionate, and butyrate.
