North Carolina DMV to Launch Optional Mobile ID App for Enhanced Privacy and Convenience
The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is set to launch a new mobile ID program this December, coinciding with the holiday travel season. This digital identification card, accessible via the NC Wallet app, will be optional and will not replace physical driver's licenses. Initially, the mobile ID will be accepted at participating Transportation Security Administration (TSA) locations in North Carolina, with plans for broader acceptance in the future. Marty Homan, communications director with the North Carolina DMV, emphasized that the mobile ID puts control of personal information back into the user's hands, allowing individuals to selectively share data such as date of birth, address, or donor status. Users will be able to download the app, scan their Real ID driver's license, and add a photo of themselves to create their mobile ID, which can then be secured with a face scan, fingerprint, or phone password.
