U.S. Renters Face Increasing Cost Burden as Housing Expenses Rise
A significant portion of U.S. renters are experiencing financial strain as housing costs consume a large share of their income. According to data from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Census, approximately 49.7% of renters nationwide spend more than 30% of their income on housing, a threshold that defines a 'cost burden.' This issue is particularly acute in high-cost states such as Florida, Nevada, California, Hawaii, and Colorado, where more than half of renters exceed this threshold. The rising rent costs are outpacing wage growth, leading to financial instability and increased risk of eviction for many renters, especially in urban and coastal regions.
