Electric Vehicles Aid Solar Power in Tropical Cities Amid Thunderstorms
In tropical cities, frequent thunderstorms pose challenges to solar power generation, often leading to temporary power shortages. According to a study published in Nature, electric vehicles (EVs) can help mitigate these issues by acting as temporary energy storage. When thunderstorms occur, parked EVs can discharge stored energy into the local grid, compensating for the reduced solar output. This approach avoids the need for costly infrastructure upgrades, such as new transmission lines, which are particularly expensive in dense urban areas like Singapore. The study, conducted by researchers from Columbia University and the Singapore-ETH Centre, highlights the potential of EVs to enhance solar photovoltaic integration without overwhelming existing grid capacities.
