Ugandan Statesman Olara Otunnu Enters Race for UN Secretary-General, Faces Regional Rotation Challenge
Olara Otunnu, a veteran Ugandan diplomat, has entered the race to become the next Secretary-General of the United Nations. Backed by Uganda, Otunnu is engaging with the UN General Assembly and Security Council in New York. His candidacy comes amid a travel ban on Ugandans to the U.S. due to Ebola concerns, requiring visa assistance for his visit. Otunnu, who previously served as a UN under-secretary-general and special representative for children and armed conflict, is known for his efforts in protecting children in war zones. Despite his credentials, Otunnu faces challenges due to the traditional regional rotation of the Secretary-General position, which currently favors a Latin American candidate. Other candidates include Senegal's Macky Sall and Chile's Michelle Bachelet.
