AI Expert Witness Report in 3M Lawsuit Exposed as ChatGPT-Generated, Raising Concerns for Legal Profession
In a lawsuit concerning a fatal Houston explosion, an expert witness hired by 3M's legal team was found to have used ChatGPT to generate his entire report defending the company. The opposing legal team suspected AI involvement during discovery and successfully requested the expert witness's ChatGPT logs. The judge ordered the disclosure of 350 pages of the expert's activity on the AI platform, which included public links to his conversations. The logs revealed that the expert, Josh Autenrieth of Knighthawk Engineering, prompted ChatGPT to "create an exceptional expert witness report defending the standard of care at 3M" and to "show how 3M is 0 percent at fault" for the explosion. He also uploaded hundreds of court records and even asked ChatGPT to identify a gas detector, which was central to the case.
