Global Heatwaves Intensify Health Risks Amid Climate Change
Heatwaves are becoming increasingly frequent, intense, and prolonged due to climate change, posing significant health risks worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), heat stress is a leading cause of weather-related deaths and exacerbates underlying health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and respiratory issues. Vulnerable populations, including the elderly, outdoor workers, and those in low-quality housing, are particularly at risk. Between 2000 and 2019, approximately 489,000 heat-related deaths occurred annually, with Asia and Europe accounting for the majority. The summer of 2022 alone saw over 61,000 excess deaths in Europe due to extreme heat. Heatwaves also disrupt essential services, including healthcare, power, and transportation, further compounding their impact.
