Retired Judge Orchestrates Rescue of Torahs from Indiana Synagogue Closure
A retired judge, Jerry Orbach, coordinated the rescue of four Torah scrolls and other religious artifacts from the United Hebrew Congregation in Terre Haute, Indiana, which recently sold its building. The operation involved a dentist, a rabbi, and a violin maker, all members of the Northbrook Community Synagogue in Illinois. The synagogue, which had been in continuous use for 175 years, was forced to sell its building due to a declining Jewish population in the area. The rescued items included Torah scrolls, brass menorahs, and numerous books, which were transported to Northbrook for safekeeping. Orbach, who has a history of preserving Jewish artifacts, organized the mission from Arizona, where he was recovering from surgery.
