Body-Based Techniques Offer Rapid Stress Reduction, Bypassing Cognitive Processes
Modern high-performance training programs, including those for astronauts, soldiers, and elite athletes, are increasingly adopting body-based techniques like the physiological sigh and box breathing for immediate stress reduction. These methods work by directly influencing the autonomic nervous system through mechanical pathways, rather than relying on cognitive processes such as positive thinking or self-talk. The physiological sigh involves a double inhale followed by a long exhale, while box breathing consists of equal four-second intervals for inhaling, holding, exhaling, and holding empty. These techniques have moved beyond their original communities and are now used in various U.S. military stress-inoculation programs, law enforcement training, commercial aviation, and professional sports. Research indicates that slow, deliberate breathing at around six breaths per minute can rapidly shift the nervous system, making the parasympathetic (rest and recovery) branch dominant and subordinating the sympath...
