Massive Power Outage in San Francisco Due to System Glitch, Affecting Thousands
A massive power outage in San Francisco affected approximately 9,400 PG&E customers after a routine operation at two substations triggered a protective device. A system glitch mistakenly alerted about 120,000 customers of a power loss, although only 9,400 were actually affected. The outage began around 9:45 a.m., impacting the Richmond and Golden Gate Park neighborhoods. The erroneous alert drew attention to PG&E's status as a state-regulated monopoly, with no direct competition in its service territory. The utility has since restored power and is investigating the cause of the outage.
