Hartford Leaders Strengthen Civilian Police Review Board's Authority to Investigate Misconduct
Hartford city leaders have unanimously voted to reinforce the powers of the city's independent police oversight board, the Civilian Police Review Board (CPRB). This decision aims to bolster the board's ability to investigate allegations of police misconduct. The Hartford City Council revised an ordinance to clarify that the CPRB and its inspector general can compel police to release internal documents and provide testimony in misconduct investigations. Furthermore, the changes strengthen the board's capacity to pursue arbitration when the police chief disputes its findings. This move comes after challenges from the Hartford Police Union and the police department, which had previously stalled the board's investigations. Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam is expected to sign the measure this week, stating that the city is proud to have the most robust civilian oversight system in the state and will continue to work collaboratively to build trust between residents and law enforcement.
