United Nations Initiates Decade of Sustainable Transport to Advance Global Development Goals
The United Nations has launched the Decade of Sustainable Transport (2026-2035) with an implementation plan aimed at aligning policies, finance, technology, and data to promote sustainable transport. This initiative, unveiled in New York, is the result of a participatory consultation process involving governments, industry, civil society, academia, and the UN system. The plan emphasizes cleaner mobility, safer systems, and the extension of markets, which are crucial for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The launch event highlighted 83 commitments from around the world, with significant financial resources dedicated to clean and fairer mobility, zero-emission road transport, and transport-related capacity building. The World Shipping Council (WSC) emphasized the importance of including ocean shipping in this initiative, noting the sector's investment in renewable marine fuels and infrastructure.
