Texas Children's Hospital to Open First 'Detransition Clinic' Following DOJ Settlement
Texas Children's Hospital in Houston has agreed to establish the nation's first 'detransition clinic' as part of a settlement with the Department of Justice and the Texas Attorney General. The settlement concludes a lengthy investigation into the hospital's billing practices related to gender-affirming care for minors. The hospital will also pay $10 million in damages and civil penalties and terminate five doctors involved in providing such care. This development is part of broader efforts by the Trump administration to restrict access to gender-affirming treatments for minors, following a 2025 Supreme Court decision that allowed states to ban these treatments. The hospital has stated that the settlement is a strategic decision to avoid prolonged litigation, and the new clinic will offer services free of charge for the first five years.
