Arkansas Legislature Considers New Nuclear Reactors Amid Rising Energy Demand
The Arkansas Joint Energy Committee was presented with a study by EXCEL Services Corp. indicating that locations in southwest and Central Arkansas are suitable for new nuclear reactors. Brian Meadors, an attorney with EXCEL, highlighted the increasing energy demand in Arkansas, driven by the growth of hyperscale data centers and the retirement of coal plants. Entergy Arkansas projects a 35% increase in energy demand over the next five years, necessitating an additional 4,000 megawatts of power. The study evaluated six potential sites for small modular reactors, with southwest and Central Arkansas emerging as the most viable due to their seismic stability, proximity to water sources, and access to transmission lines. The study suggests that these reactors could help meet the state's energy needs more effectively than other alternatives.
