Face Matching Technology Bolsters Identity Verification to Combat Impersonation Fraud
Face matching technology is becoming a cornerstone of identity verification (IDV) systems, serving as a critical safeguard against impersonation fraud. Unlike general face recognition, which performs a one-to-many search, face matching is a one-to-one verification process. It compares a live selfie or video capture with a portrait photo from a government-issued ID document, such as a passport or driver's license, to confirm that the person presenting the document is its rightful owner. This process involves several stages: capturing a live image, performing quality checks for proper lighting and pose, and conducting liveness detection to ensure the input is from a real human and not a spoofing attempt. Following these checks, facial features are extracted using deep neural networks to create a mathematical representation, or embedding. This embedding is then compared to the ID portrait's embedding, generating a similarity score. A high score results in verification, while a low score may prompt a retry or ...
