Wildfires and Heatwaves Threaten Global Air Quality and Health, Warns UN
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has issued a stark warning about the growing impact of wildfires and heatwaves on global air quality and public health. According to the WMO's latest Air Quality and Climate Bulletin, extreme wildfires are increasing in frequency and intensity, releasing highly toxic smoke that poses significant health risks. While regulations in Europe and North America have successfully reduced industrial and transport-related PM2.5 emissions, exposure to fire-related PM2.5 has surged. These microscopic particles, less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter, can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream, causing severe health issues. The report also highlights the need for improved monitoring of air pollutants such as aerosols, black carbon, microplastics, and ground-level ozone, which are widespread and harmful to ecosystems. The WMO emphasizes the interconnected nature of air quality and climate change, urging coordinated policies to address both issues simultaneously.
