ExxonMobil Joliet Refinery Experiences Power Outage, Halting Production and Raising Gas Price Concerns
A power outage on Sunday caused significant issues at ExxonMobil's refinery in Joliet, Illinois, leading to a shutdown of production. The incident, which occurred around 3:30 p.m., resulted in a large plume of smoke billowing from the facility's safety flares, a precautionary measure taken during such events. While power has since been restored, the refinery is not yet operating at its regular capacity, and units are still being stabilized. According to Reuters, it could take several more days for normal service to resume. The Joliet refinery is a crucial facility, producing approximately 11 million gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel daily, which is distributed across the U.S. ExxonMobil stated that their primary focus is the safety of the community and workforce, and all appropriate agencies have been notified, with air monitoring underway.
