Georgia Museum of Art to Host Major Retrospective of Sculptor Edmonia Lewis
The Georgia Museum of Art is set to debut a major retrospective exhibition of Edmonia Lewis, a 19th-century Black and Indigenous sculptor. The exhibition, titled 'Edmonia Lewis: Said in Stone,' will run from August 8, 2026, to January 3, 2027, featuring nearly 30 sculptures from various collections. This exhibition is the result of a decade-long effort led by Shawnya L. Harris, curator of African American and African Diasporic Art at the museum. Lewis, known for her ties to the abolitionist movement, created numerous works, many of which have been lost over time. The exhibition will include a 3D digital scan of her famous sculpture 'The Death of Cleopatra,' which cannot travel due to its condition.
