Retired Lawyer Seeks Mortgage Release Citing Manic Episode During $5.5M Cape Cod Purchase
John G. Bonomi Jr, a retired New York lawyer, is seeking to void a $3.85 million mortgage on a Cape Cod mansion he purchased for $5.5 million in 2021. Bonomi claims he was experiencing a manic episode due to Bipolar I Disorder at the time of purchase, which led to irrational decision-making. The mansion, located between Cape Cod Bay and Wellfleet Harbor, was built in 2010 and has since been demolished due to erosion risks. Bonomi is suing JPMorgan Chase, alleging the bank took advantage of his condition by approving the loan despite his mental state. He argues that the bank should have recognized his incapacity to make such a financial decision. The lawsuit, filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, seeks to void the mortgage, along with interest, damages, and attorney's fees.
