Iranian Scientist's Family Detained in U.S. After Resident Status Revoked
Iranian scientist Maryam Tahmasebi, her husband Seyyed Issa Hashemi, and their teenage son have been held in custody in Texas for several months. The U.S. government revoked their legal permanent resident status, linking the decision to Hashemiβs mother, Masoumeh Ebtekar, according to BBC News World. Ebtekar was the English-speaking spokesperson for students who seized the U.S. Embassy in Tehran in 1979 and held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days. She later held various positions in the Iranian government, including Vice President for Women and Family Affairs, though she has not held government positions since 2021. Tahmasebi, a professor of psychology and statistics, and her family legally entered the U.S. on visas in 2014 and became lawful permanent residents in 2016. They were detained by immigration agents in April. Tahmasebi and her son are held in a detention center in Dille, Texas, while Hashemi is in the South Texas Detention Facility in Pearsall.
