Las Vegas Judge Sanctions Attorney for AI Misuse in Legal Filing
A Las Vegas judge has sanctioned defense attorney Dean Kajioka for using artificial intelligence inappropriately in a legal brief. The brief, filed on behalf of Robert Schwieger, a suspect in a bombing case, contained a citation to a non-existent case, which prosecutors identified as an 'AI hallucination.' The judge ordered the document to be struck and imposed a $500 sanction payable to the Clark County library. Kajioka admitted that AI was used to assist in drafting the brief, although he initially claimed the citation error was a typo. The case highlights concerns about the use of AI in legal practice, particularly regarding accuracy and ethical standards.
