Hawaii Health Department Confirms Fourth Cyclosporiasis Case, Maintains Low Risk Level
The Hawaii Department of Health has confirmed a fourth case of cyclosporiasis in the state. The patient, a military service member, had traveled internationally before returning to Hawaii and falling ill. Health officials are investigating whether the infection was acquired locally or during travel. Despite the new case, the overall risk level in Hawaii remains low. Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the Cyclospora cayetanensis parasite, often linked to imported fresh produce. Symptoms include diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fatigue, and the illness is treatable with antibiotics.
