WhatsApp Introduces Usernames in Beta to Enhance Privacy
WhatsApp has begun rolling out a new feature allowing users to create usernames, aiming to enhance privacy by reducing the reliance on phone numbers for identification. This phased rollout is currently available to a limited number of users on both Android and iOS platforms. The introduction of usernames allows users to keep their phone numbers private, although a phone number is still required to use the app initially. Usernames can be customized with specific character restrictions and linked to Facebook or Instagram accounts, but cannot duplicate existing names on these platforms. Additionally, WhatsApp offers a 'username key,' a 4-digit code for sending messages to new usernames.
