Kirby's Survival: Dog Found After 7 Weeks in Black Hills Faces Health Challenges
A dog named Kirby, who went missing on June 17, 2026, was found alive after nearly seven weeks in the Black Hills forest. The discovery was made possible by a community-wide search effort in Custer. Upon being found, Kirby was severely malnourished, covered in wounds, and infested with ticks. He was immediately taken to an emergency veterinarian for intensive care. Despite his critical condition, Kirby has shown resilience, managing to eat, drink, and walk. To enhance his recovery prospects, Kirby was transferred to Colorado State University for specialized treatment. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support his medical expenses, with plans to donate any excess funds to a local animal rescue organization.
