Germany Reinstates Dublin Mechanism for Asylum Seekers, Impacting Somali Woman
Germany has resumed the Dublin Mechanism for returning asylum seekers to Italy, following an agreement with Rome in December 2025. This mechanism, part of the European Common Asylum System, identifies the country responsible for processing asylum applications, typically the first EU country an asylum seeker enters. The first individual affected by this resumption is a 22-year-old Somali woman who arrived in Germany in March 2026 after entering the EU via Italy. She is currently in a reception center in Bavaria and has been notified of her transfer back to Italy on August 19. This move comes as new EU regulations on migration and asylum take effect, aiming to streamline asylum processes and responsibilities among member states.
