Chugwater's Igloo House Withstands Extreme Weather Conditions
In Chugwater, Wyoming, Charles and Susan Randolph have built a unique monolithic dome home, nicknamed 'Hoth' after the icy planet in Star Wars. This dome-shaped house is designed to endure extreme weather conditions, including hailstorms, tornadoes, and even earthquakes. Constructed in 2017, the house features a concrete foundation, a balloon framework, 12 inches of insulation, and 900 pieces of rebar for reinforcement. The structure is also energy-efficient, staying warm during harsh Wyoming winters and cool during the summer. The Randolphs' home has already proven its resilience, withstanding a hailstorm that caused $40,000 in damage to a neighbor's property while sustaining only minor, self-repairing dimples. The house also remained at a comfortable 64°F (18°C) during a December cold snap that brought temperatures down to -40°F (-40°C).
