Probiotics and Prebiotics: Evaluating Their Impact on Asthma in Adults
A systematic review and meta-analysis have been conducted to evaluate the effects of probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics on lung function and symptoms in adults with bronchial asthma. The study analyzed 13 randomized controlled trials, revealing that multi-strain probiotics and synbiotics may offer mild improvements in lung function. However, the evidence does not support their routine clinical use due to inconsistent results across studies. The review highlights the potential of these supplements to modulate the gut-lung axis, which could influence asthma symptoms. Despite some positive findings, the study calls for larger, long-term trials to confirm efficacy and establish optimal treatment regimens.
