Apex Town Council Enacts Yearlong Moratorium on Data Centers and Cryptomining
The Apex Town Council in North Carolina has unanimously voted to impose a 12-month moratorium on the development of data centers, data processing facilities, and cryptocurrency mining operations. This decision follows extensive public opposition to a proposed data center project near Old U.S. 1 and Sharon Harris Road, which was withdrawn by the developer after significant community pushback. Residents expressed concerns about the potential impact of such facilities on local water and energy resources, as well as the overall character of the town. The moratorium, effective from April 28, 2026, to April 2027, aims to provide town officials with the necessary time to study the implications of data centers, including zoning standards and mitigation strategies, and to learn from how other communities have addressed similar issues.
