Bernard Francis 'Bern' Wheel, a longtime resident of Oak Park, Illinois, passed away on July 16, 2026, at the age of 96. Known for his generosity and commitment to community service, Bern and his wife Marie were instrumental in providing refuge to 14 Vietnamese boat people during the late 1970s. The couple, deeply rooted in their faith and community at St. Catherine-St. Lucy Parish, opened their home to individuals ranging from ages 11 to 80, helping them acclimate to life in the United States. Bern's life was marked by his dedication to service, both as a former diocesan priest and as an accountant in Chicago. His hobbies included snowshoeing and learning Esperanto, reflecting his love for the outdoors and global peace.
