U.S. Public Health Laboratories Face Workforce Shortages and Funding Instability Amidst Pandemic Preparedness Efforts
Public health laboratories in the U.S. are grappling with significant challenges, including workforce shortages, funding instability, and operational strains, as they work to strengthen pandemic preparedness. A recent analysis by the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) highlights that from 2016 to 2024, there has been an alarming increase in public health laboratory workforce members intending to leave their positions and a decline in job satisfaction. These issues are exacerbated by ongoing public health emergencies and budget constraints, which contribute to stress, burnout, and attrition among laboratory staff.
