Genetic Predisposition to COPD Linked to Air Pollution Impact on Children's Lung Growth
New research from Switzerland indicates that children with a genetic predisposition to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) may experience negative impacts on lung development if exposed to air pollution. COPD is a progressive condition causing chronic bronchitis and emphysema, leading to persistent airflow limitation, breathlessness, and coughing. While commonly associated with smoking and aging, this study suggests that early-life genetic and environmental factors play a significant role. Lead investigator Carla da Silva Sena, PhD, a postdoctoral researcher from University Children’s Hospital Basel, highlighted that COPD can develop if lungs do not reach their full growth potential in childhood or if lung function declines faster later in life. The study followed 484 children from infancy to around six years, analyzing their COPD polygenic risk scores and lung-function measurements.
