Texas A Study Reveals Creatine Builds Muscle and Strength in Middle-Aged Adults, Even Without Exercise
A recent 12-week study conducted by Texas A&M University researchers found that middle-aged adults aged 45 to 65 who supplemented with creatine monohydrate experienced gains in lean tissue and improved strength, even without engaging in structured exercise. Participants who did not exercise but took 10 grams of creatine monohydrate daily gained approximately 2.4 pounds of lean tissue and showed increased leg and bench press strength. The study, published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, also observed greater benefits when creatine supplementation was combined with a structured exercise and calorie-reduction program. In this group, participants gained nearly 3 pounds of lean tissue, lost body fat, and saw enhanced strength and endurance. Creatine, a naturally occurring compound produced in the liver, kidneys, and pancreas, and found in foods like red meat and seafood, helps generate energy for muscles and the brain.
