U.S. Vehicle Thefts Decline Significantly Due to Coordinated Efforts
Vehicle thefts in the United States have seen a significant decline, reaching their lowest levels in decades. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), 659,880 vehicles were reported stolen nationwide last year, marking a 23 percent decrease from 2024. This follows a 17 percent decline in 2024, which was the largest single-year drop in 40 years. The reduction in thefts is attributed to coordinated prevention efforts by law enforcement, auto manufacturers, insurance companies, and the NICB. Despite the positive trend, vehicle theft remains a concern, with one vehicle still stolen every 48 seconds in the U.S. The decline in thefts has been particularly notable in states like Washington, Colorado, and Puerto Rico, which saw decreases of 39 percent, 35 percent, and 34 percent, respectively.
