Understanding Qualifying Conditions for OPM Disability Retirement
The Bell Law Group has provided insights into the qualifying conditions for federal disability retirement under the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). While there is no official list of medical conditions that automatically qualify for disability retirement, certain health issues may make federal employees eligible if they impact their ability to perform job duties. Conditions such as cancer, ALS, serious back or spine problems, cognitive disorders, and various mental health conditions are among those that could qualify. The key requirement is that the condition must prevent the employee from performing essential job functions. Additionally, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) considers whether the employing agency can accommodate the disability or reassign the employee to a comparable position.
