South 8 Scales Production of Cold-Weather Battery Systems for Defense and Specialty Applications
San Diego-based battery manufacturer South 8 has initiated volume manufacturing of its new semi-automated battery cell production line, specifically designed for cold-weather applications. This expansion is expected to add 5 MWh of annual manufacturing capacity for cylindrical cells, with the goal of enhancing the company's market presence in defense and other specialty sectors that operate in extreme cold environments. The expansion supports the production of South 8’s ARCTIC AE35 18650 cell, which utilizes a liquefied gas electrolyte to enable reliable charging at temperatures as low as -76°F (-60°C). The company has also established supplier agreements for key battery cell materials and components, ensuring all production remains on American shores and avoids existing FEOC restrictions.
