New York City Schools Implement YouTube Ban and Screen Time Limits on Student Devices
New York City schools have blocked YouTube access on all school-issued Chromebooks and iPads, including when students use them at home, according to WPIX. This decision, announced by Scott Strickland, deputy chief information officer at New York City Public Schools, during a City Council oversight hearing in September, is part of a broader effort to address concerns about student screen time. The move extends existing rules that prohibit personal devices in schools. Additionally, the New York City Education Department has established specific screen time guidelines for different grade levels: students in 2-K through second grade are to have no screen time, grades three through five are capped at 30 minutes daily, and middle school students at 45 minutes daily.
