Housing Costs Impede Family Formation for U.S. Millennials and Gen Z
A study by Habitat for Humanity, based on responses from 30,000 individuals across 22 countries, reveals that 62% of millennials and Gen Z members consider housing costs a significant barrier to starting a family. The report, titled 'A Home, But At What Cost?', indicates that for these younger generations, paying rent or a mortgage often means postponing other crucial life plans, including having children, saving money, or even meeting basic needs. Globally, 75% of respondents reported cutting back on essential expenses like food and healthcare due to housing costs, with this figure rising to 81% among younger generations. In the United States, 42% of participants do not expect to ever own a home, a sentiment that reflects the profound impact of housing affordability on long-term life goals. The study also highlights that 35% of individuals view housing-related issues as a primary source of stress, and renters report a greater negative impact on their health compared to homeowners.
