Cyberchondria: Excessive Online Health Searches Linked to Increased Anxiety and Misinterpretation of Symptoms
Cyberchondria is characterized by the compulsive and excessive searching for health-related information online, which often leads to heightened anxiety and the misinterpretation of physical symptoms. This behavior is a form of health anxiety, where individuals repeatedly engage in online searches concerning their health, creating a cycle of worry and potential misinformation. According to medical literature, this condition is closely related to what was formerly known as hypochondria, now often referred to as Illness Anxiety Disorder. Individuals experiencing cyberchondria may become obsessed with normal bodily functions, misinterpreting minor changes as signs of fatal diseases.
