Miami Herald Faces Significant Staff Reductions, Impacting Local News Coverage
The Miami Herald has been severely impacted by recent layoffs, resulting in a reduction of over 30% of its newsroom staff. According to Carol Marbin Miller, the deputy investigations editor, 20 journalists were laid off and 10 vacant positions were eliminated. This leaves the newsroom with fewer than 50 journalists, a stark contrast to the approximately 300 journalists employed when Marbin Miller joined in 2000. The cuts have led to the elimination of key beats, including coverage of the city of Miami and Miami Beach. These reductions are part of broader layoffs by McClatchy, the private investment firm Chatham Asset Management, which affected over 90 journalists across 13 papers in eight states. The cuts impacted various roles, from reporters and photographers to videographers, and covered diverse areas such as government, education, accountability, and sports.
