Gut Bacteria's Role in Health: Fiber and Plant Proteins as Key Influencers
Recent research highlights the complex relationship between diet, gut bacteria, and human metabolism. Studies led by Ludwig Princeton researchers found that fiber and plant proteins can prevent gut bacteria from consuming the intestines' protective lining, promoting better gut health. The research focused on phenols, metabolites produced by gut bacteria, and how diet influences their production. Fiber and indigestible plant proteins, termed 'proteins imitating fiber' (Prif), were shown to shift microbial activity towards producing beneficial metabolites. This discovery challenges the assumption that important compounds in the body are solely produced by gut bacteria.
