Social Security COLA Projected to Increase by 3.6% in 2027, Largest Boost in Four Years
The Senior Citizens League (TSCL) projects a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for Social Security in 2027. This adjustment, if it holds, would increase the average retiree's monthly check by $69.75, raising it from $1,937.53 to $2,007.28. This would represent the largest COLA increase in four years, surpassing the 2.8% COLA in 2026 which added $56 to the average benefit. The projection follows the release of July's Consumer Price Index (CPI), which indicated a 3.4% year-over-year increase in consumer prices. The Social Security Administration is expected to announce the official 2027 COLA in October, after inflation numbers are finalized, with recipients receiving personalized notices in December. Another prediction from TSCL is anticipated on September 11, following the release of August inflation data.
