Jonathan the Tortoise, World's Oldest Known Land Animal, Alive Despite Death Hoax
Jonathan, the world's oldest known tortoise, was reported dead at the age of 193, but this claim has been debunked as a hoax. The false news circulated on social media, purportedly from his vet, Joe Hollins, who later clarified that Jonathan is alive and well. The hoax was linked to a scam asking for cryptocurrency donations. Jonathan, who resides on St Helena, has been a historical figure, having met notable personalities including Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. He was brought to St Helena from the Seychelles in the 1880s and has lived on the grounds of Plantation House, the Governor's residence. Jonathan's age is estimated based on a photograph from 1882, suggesting he was around 50 years old at the time.
