Newark Airport Implements eGates for Expedited TSA Pre-Check Security Screening
Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) has introduced new eGates at the United Airlines security checkpoint in Terminal C, designed to significantly speed up the security screening process for eligible travelers. These eGates allow passengers to complete identity verification in under three seconds. To utilize this technology, travelers must have TSA Pre-Check, be a member of the United Airlines loyalty program, upload their passport to the United app, and opt into the touchless ID program. According to Greg Hawko, the federal security director for Newark's TSA, the system uses facial matching, not facial recognition, and images taken are immediately deleted. Newark is the first airport to debut these specific eGates, although similar touchless ID lanes exist elsewhere and comparable technology is common in international airports. The TSA emphasizes that the eGates are optional, with traditional security lanes remaining available.
